In the light of internationalization and expansion, Banque Louis SA relies on Appway’s Wealth Management & Compliance Solution

Zurich, 20 July 2010 – To enable the strongly expanding Banque Louis to continue their focus on comprehensive consulting of assets for private and institutional investors, the specialized private bank with South African origins decided on Appway's Wealth Management & Compliance Solutions. The solution they were looking for was bound to instantly support international and transnational processes and to go live in the short term of a couple of months.

ASCO Award 2010: Numcom awarded for Best Business Transformation

On June 1, 2010, the annual ASCO Award ceremony took place at the Kongresshaus in Zurich. Numcom, together with Bank Julius Baer, were awarded for their Compliance Solution for the Best Business Transformation.

The closing part of the annual "ASCO Day of Consulting" (ASCO: Association of Management Consultants Switzerland) in the Kongresshaus in Zurich is the prominent ASCO Award ceremony for the "Best Business Transformation". It's outcome always attracts a lot of the Swiss economy's attention such as Handelszeitung & The Wall Street Journal. This year's event took place on Wednesday, June 1, 2010. Numcom was there, nominated for the Award.

It's a jury of 14 experienced professionals that verifies the projects to be qualified for the Award. In order to be selected, the companies (which have to be based in Switzerland) had to file their project describing its content and implementation and providing details about the customer with whom they had realized the project. Out of the numberous applications, the jury nominated 9 projects to be qualified for the ASCO Award.

We were awarded for our Appway BPM Compliance Solution and Regulatory Application which we implemented for Julius Baer Group the leading Swiss private banking group. Following a short abstract about the project, published on ASCO's website:

"Within the scope of the always more demanding compliance rules, the process of the delicate identity verification of existing and new customer relationships had been successfully automated by the Appway Compliance & Regulatory Application (CoRA) between April 2008 and January 2009. Doing so, besides a considerable process benefit, the verification quality could be increased, the process sustainably positioned througout all business levels and the Bank Julius Baer as a Swiss Bank reinforced in the international regulative environment."

Paco Hauser @ Numcom

The sophisticated atmosphere of Restaurant Bärengasse underlined the picture of the approximately 45 distinguished guests, that were invited to Paco Hauser's special event on the evening of 31 May. Paco Hauser has been our COO and Director Professional Services for 2 months now, which for Numcom is a reason alone to celebrate. But it was not the only one: Paco wanted to tell a story to this close round of invitees. His story - which is closely intertwined with the story of Appway. As a matter of fact, Paco Hauser was part of Numcom from the first moment on, as he is - together with our CEO Hanspeter Wolf and our CTO Oliver Brupbacher - a founding member of our company.

The invitees hung on his lips, as Paco told them anecdotally about his career steps starting at Atraxis, Swissair's former IT daughter, followed by KPMG Consulting (today BearingPoint), CSC and Arthur D. Little. Exciting was the part, when he explained how he met, befriended and coached Hanspeter and Oliver up to the point where they accepted the challenge and established Numcom. The forth man in the executive’s shamrock joined our company in September 2008: our Sales Manager René Hürlimann.

As the four of them stood there in the spotlight in front of their audience they certainly looked like a band, as moderator Hannes Hug from Radio DRS 3 stated. Hannes Hug interviewed the quartet during the next half an hour about Appway and Numcom's future plans including growth targets and global expansion. He compared the team with musicians: Hanspeter the lead singer, Oliver at the drums, Paco at the guitar and René at the bass, playing their instruments with verve but together, as a team, in perfection. A band - after years of playing in hip but small clubs - now ready to have big gigs in huge concert halls all over the world before a cheering and clapping bunch of fans, Hannes Hug predicted. With this allegory, he said goodbye to the amused attendees. After some short and summarizing words, Paco begged his guests out in the light court, to finish the evening with a chat by a relaxing glass of Argentinean Malbec and some bites of the always delicious Apéro Riche of Restaurant Bärengasse.

Nobody who left would have done this without thanking Paco for a wonderful and ingenious evening and the intention of keeping an eye on Appway's next steps on the international stages: we'll keep on rocking.

First Appway Partner Meet-up 2010 – 28.04.2010

Wednesday, 28 April 2010, the 1st Appway Partner Meet-up took place in Gate 68, the new-modeled meeting rooms of Numcom Software’s headquarters at Hardturmstrasse 68 in Zurich, Switzerland. 25 guests from 11 different Partner companies came to meet the Appbirds, to hear about Numcom’s latest news and Partner’s projects featuring Appway.

The air buzzed with chatter and welcome greetings, at 3 p.m. last Wednesday at our headquarters in Zurich downtown. More than 25 people in business suits stood relaxed around the bistro tables, sipping orange juice and sparkling water and wondering about what they had to expect of the afternoon’s program.

The event began with the partners introducing themselves in a short prepared 2-minutes presentation about their company and the role of Appway, our Business Solution, within their strategy. Our Sales Director, René Hürlimann, guided the speakers skillfully through their task and continued with the welcoming of Paco Hauser, who is acting as our new COO and Head of Professional Services since the beginning of the month. After some well received words of Paco, René yielded the floor for our CTO and Head of R&D, Oliver Brupbacher, who made a short and concise overview of the newest Appway features to come – and gained spontaneous applause for his abstract. As last speaker before the coffee break, Philip Schoch, one of our Consultants, gave an online show case of the recently and successfully gone live project for one of our international clients - Banque Louis.

After the delicious strawberry tarts in the coffee break, the attendees were refreshed enough to enjoy the second part of the afternoon beginning with IBM’s show case. Markus Spörri and Alexander Karg presented IBM’s OTMS integration with Appway and a joined project at an international Private Bank. René Hürlimann swiftly took over with an outlook on Numcom’s Partner and Support Strategy. And then it was time for Hanspeter Wolf, our CEO, to open Skype (due to the ash cloud) for an on-line session live from New York City. His Numcom vision update, Hanspeter put the cherry on top of this successful first Numcom Partner Meet-up.

Speaking of cherries: the apéro riche at Shpères subsequent to the event was a success by itself.. Thank you all for coming, we definitively are going to repeat this!

Paco Hauser is new COO and Director Professional Services with Numcom Software AG

Zurich, 1 April 2010 – Numcom Software AG expands with immediate effect its executive board and enforces the business department Professional Services for further expansion.

47-years old Paco Hauser started his professional career at Atraxis, Swissair’s former IT daughter. There, he worked over ten years in various line and executive positions. At KPMG Consulting, today BearingPoint, he was in charge building the e-business consulting division. Afterwards, he changed to CSC where he was head of the consulting business unit. Last, Paco Hauser acted for several years as a partner with Arthur D. Little for the Financial Services Practice. During all this time he gained a broad knowledge of banks and assurances through a multitude of strategy and transformation projects. Paco Hauser has a degree as Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and successfully completed an EMBA at the IMD in Lausanne.

With his long-time and comprehensive experience in process and strategy consulting, as well as in all IT sectors, Paco Hauser worked for notable financial institutions; IT enterprises and transportation, logistics, telecommunications and energy companies in the last few years. At Numcom, he will be entrusted with the lead and continuous build-up of the consulting team, the development of new services, the exploitation of new markets and the professional customer management. Paco Hauser is very well acquainted with Numcom: since 2003 he has been a shareholder and active as a member of the board.

Appway attends the ETH Zurich’s IT contact party 2010

Last Saturday, March 6, 2010 the annual IT contact party (ETH-Kontaktparty) took place, a successful platform organized by the association of IT students of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). The event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year – 25 years of successfully connecting Information Technology students and alumni with the country’s leading IT companies. The attention of the economy in search of tomorrow’s talents is high: more than 80 exhibitors gathered in the ETH mensa, the venue of the event, that day. And they came, nonetheless the weekend day: approximately 300 interested students participated in the event, some specific in their selection of companies they wanted to inspect, others just stopping by on tables that caught their interest.

For Numcom Software, represented by three of our Appbirds (people working with Appway) it was the first time we attended: “The contact party is an ideal lookout for new talents and perfect to get in touch with students and alumni in an informal way. It was remarkable how well-informed and prepared the people were. Most of the participants were interested in a traineeship. We had the opportunity to talk to promising candidates and certainly will keep track of them”, says Oliver Brupbacher, our Director R&D.

From his point of view, the aim to establish some good connections with young talents and – not to underestimate - a good brand positioning among the future graduates had been achieved: the contact party was really worth a visit.

Even though Numcom Software is growing rapidly and has customers all over the world, our heart remains in Zurich. Our headquarters are located in Zurich West, the former industrial quarter between the Limmat River and the railroad tracks that has been reinvented into an attractive, modern part of our city. Since inception, our office is located in Zurich's famous Zürich-Paris house on the 1st and 4th floor, just next door to the book and magazine filled Spheres cafe, one of the coolest and most relaxed spots in Zurich West. Many of us live in this fantastic city, and some of our employees have graduated from ETH Zürich, one of the world's foremost universities.

Although we are a world-wide company, we remain committed to Zürich. Public transport runs smoothly, the view of the Alps from the lake is compelling, nights out are fun and the standard of living remains resolutely high. Internet giant Google liked the city so much, it set up its European headquarters here.

With a population of just over 360,000 people, Zürich may not be particularly large by international standards, but by Swiss standards, it is a true cosmopolitan metropolis. And our sprawling city is still growing. In fact, it is growing right outside of our window:

On the left-hand side, you can see the Prime Tower being built. This beautiful new landmark building will house 36 floors. It'll eventually be 126 meters high, and - among many other things - offer office space for 120 workspaces.

On the right, you can see the Mobimo Tower. Clocking in at a planned 80 meters, it's not quite as high as the Prime Tower, but it will eventually be almost as impressive, and just as beautiful.

And of course, in the background, at 871 meters above sea level, you can see the Uetliberg towers over the roofs of Zürich, weather permitting.

To document this once-in-a-lifetime event that is occurring right outside our window, and as a little thank-you gift to Zürich, our home of choice, we will take a new picture of the current state of the two tower every fifteen minutes. Eventually, this will result in a nice little time-lapse movie, showing the two towers mushrooming out of the ground, paralleling the growth of our own company and our flagship product, Appway.

Bank 2015 - From Spaghetti to Lasagne

On November 4, 2009, more than 40 executives from the Financial Services Industry found their way to restaurant Bärengasse in Zurich, Switzerland to attend our unofficial After-Finance Forum session. They took the chance to gain insight into a current high-priority topic with the promising title: Bank 2015 – from Spaghetti to Lasagne.

The event's theme embraced the service-oriented approach to accomplish the transformation towards Bank 2015. With Enzo Giannini, CEO of our key partner Finaclear and professor Dr Rainer Alt, holding the chair in Information Systems and Application Systems in Business and Administration with University of Leipzig, René Hürlimann could proudly announce two capacities in their fields.

Being a team member of CC Sourcing, competence center of the Universities of St.Gallen and Leipzig, professor Dr Rainer Alt presented first-hand insights of the study: “Transformation towards Bank 2015”. The study focused on how banks will successfully master the step from traditionally grown application environments to an industrialized, process-driven approach and at the same time, to achieve operational efficiency and high value creation to cope with the requirements of a modern bank. After this review, Enzo Giannini was keen to build the bridge between research results and the praxis-oriented in-place architecture at Finaclear.

In his spirited speech, Hanspeter Wolf, founder and CEO of Numcom Software, demonstrated what “from Spaghetti to Lasagne” has to do with Appway. Requirements in (banking) business nowadays are quite demanding and various. By showing success stories of our customers, Hanspeter demonstrated how Appway is able to unite rules, processes, information and systems in one single dynamic business application.

The continuous talking about Spaghetti and Lasagne quickened the one or other participant’s appetite in a far less allegoric meaning. After a short Q&A round, René Hürlimann invited the audience to the second part of the evening: discussing ideas and challenges, having a drink and tasting the delicious Argentinean specialties of restaurant Bärengasse.

I fully agree with Rene. Now it's at the time to bring a first level of agileness to today's banking platforms. Hence starting the de-coupling and de-composing of application, processes, services and systems is a move into the right direction. Or in other words: Financial institutions should apply a "divide and conquer" approach to their IT to be fit for all future exercises. Welcome to the 21st century!

The abstract discusses the existent problem of historically grown application environments preventing a process oriented approach in banking business and the linking-up of partners and customers. Solving this problem would lead to a drastic improvement on competence and efficiency. René discloses the solutions.

It seemed to be still summer referring to the bright, pastel-colored early evening sky over Zurich, Switzerland, that 30th September. Only the leaves lazily carried away by a gentle breeze on Turbinenplatz gave sign of the advancing fall. The crowd gathering outside Aubrey, a beautiful hot spot in the heart of the city, was fully aware of the good weather, enjoying their first refreshment in the open air after a hard day’s work. An attentive eye could have counted 80 guests, all of them customers or partners of ours, or friends of Appway from the Swiss-german speaking part of Switzerland. (An equivalent event for our costumers from the Italian part of Switzerland took place in June in the picturesque city of Lugano.) The today's social event was announced under the motto “Zurich — New York — Zurich”, a virtual flight to the big apple: one of the coolest locations where we are doing business and also home of the evening’s special guest, a very famous Appway user… Guess who he is!

The air suddenly filled with anticipation when the guests were begged to come in: Wasn’t Marco Tempest, the famous multimedia magician, announced in the invitation mail? And indeed, after a short welcome speech, our CEO Hanspeter Wolf introduced the evening’s special guest to the curious audience. Exclamations of awe went through the club, which was enchantingly decorated and provided a wonderful background to the magic that was being performed on the stage. Even though Marco is used to big stages all over the world, the Zurich born and New York resident magician astonished our guests with three breathtaking sessions during the evening – the lucky ones that were there won’t forget a single one! For all others, have an impression of one or two of Marco's tricks as he presented them that very night (spoken in Swiss German).

The evening went on with interesting conversations, fine food and tasty wine served by Aubrey’s attentive staff and when the time came for us - the Appbirds, as we call ourselves and the many Appway fans and followers - to say goodbye and bid farewell to our guests we wouldn’t let them go without a bag containing a Comella chocolate drink (typically Swiss) and a blueberry muffin (typically US) to help them start the next day refreshed and in a good mood. Guests and staff both left with a smile, still enchanted by all the magic of the evening.

“Mummy, look at that cute little bird there on the window! Why is he riding a rocket? With a rocket he must be unbelievable fast, faster than anybody else, faster even than his very own chirp! Maybe he’s Superbird, Mummy? Gee, no, now I know: that must be Super Sonic Bird!” Where the youngster is pointing at is the ground floor office of Hardturmstrasse 66 in the heart of Zurich, where for a short time three big stickers cover a large part of the window front. Is there a new comic shop in town? No, and you probably won’t guess who’s renting that office space: it’s Numcom, a software company.

What has a birdie on a rocket and a software company in common, you may ask. A lot! Super Sonic Bird is our mascot. Like him, Numcom Software AG is a young company but already fully fledged and on its way to new and far horizons. With our software package called Appway we are quicker and more flexible at implementing business processes matching customer needs than our big competitors. New branch office in Lugano

In order to cope with our rapidly growing business in the south of Switzerland and South-European regions, Numcom has opened a branch office in Lugano, at Via G. B. Pioda.

The Lugano branch is headed by Andrea Buzzi and is staffed as follows:

Andrea Buzzi is Solution Manager with Numcom Software. Andrea gained the degree as Master of Business Administration at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). Before joining Numcom Software in 2006 he started his career in the business and process consultancy where he held a number of positions as a consultant and manager.

Paolo Porro, Italian citizen and born in 1973, helds the position of a Senior Technical Consultant with Numcom Software. Paolo obtained a degree in Computer Engineering at the “Politecnico di Milano”. Before joining Numcom he gained experience in multinational and national companies working in various technical positions in Italy and abroad. His strengths rely on teamwork and a logical approach to solve problems. Paolo loves to spend his time outdoors, especially sailing with his small Dinghy. He lives with his family near Como.

Pierluigi Ceppi is a Senior Consultant with Numcom Software. Pierluigi gained a degree in Engineering at the Politecnico of Milan University. Before joining Numcom Software he worked as a project manager and solution architect in various consulting engagements with multinational Consulting firms. Pierluigi is a hard-working, independently acting consultant with good analytical and teamwork skills. In his spare time, he enjoys all kind of sports but especially football; Pierluigi is fond of travelling, he likes music, and most importantly, spending time with his family.

Numcom’s 2009 Summer Get-together in Lugano: a story about the art of winemaking, Malcantone’s best grotto and the fantastic journey of Appbird

The sun was shining bright on a perfectly cloudless sky over Ticino’s financial center Lugano that early evening of June 25. Around 30 people were gathering group after group at the meeting point, all of them coming directly from their offices at BPS (Suisse), BSI or B-Source. Animated Italian chattering could be heard, now and then cascades of laughter; kisses on cheeks were exchanged and hands shaken – an often seen welcome ceremony here in Ticino, the most southern Canton of Switzerland.

The mood of Numcom’s guests reflected the weather at this second Summer Get-together that began with the welcoming speech by Numcom’s CEO Hanspeter Wolf and a short ride to the back-country of Lugano – more precisely: with a ride to a winery in the back-country of Lugano. The Tenuta Bally & von Teuffenstein is property of an old winegrowing family and known for their exquisite Merlot. During a half an hour tour through the more than two centuries old estate the party was introduced to the delicate art of winemaking. The degustation of the most tasty wines of the selection completed the visit and helped to refresh the one or more due to the heat dry throat.

After this aperitif the journey went on to the probably most beautiful and delicious grotto in the region of Malcantone. The Grotto Riviera is picturesquely situated at the vegetation-rich slopes outside of Agno where its cordial and hospitable tenant Arnaldo Riva personally cares for the wellbeing of his guests. The meal truly was sheer poetry and served on the terrace under the dawning sky. By the time the first stars appeared, the party was enjoying itself splendidly.

It was then when Hanspeter again spoke out and told his attentive audience the story of Appbird, a story about a journey as he said, a story about life. That story of little Appbird that affectionately had been fed by his parents, that had laboriously learnt how to fly but then always flew higher and for longer distances, making friends in many countries on various continents is no less than the allegorical story of Appway, Numcom’s BPM suite. Appway is well known within the guests and also the connecting link of all the persons present at that get-together – the work of each of them has contributed to Appway’s story to be one of success. The end of the speech marked a competition made up of several questions concerning Numcom or our company’s staff that challenged the audience’s brains the last time that evening. The lucky winner won an iPod Shuffle with engraved “I love Appway” on its back. Yes, we love Appway. And we hope it wasn’t the last Get-together we celebrated together: just fly, little Appbird!

We’d like to thank all our guests again for coming and for turning out in such large numbers. For us it was an almost magical evening and considering that the last ones left the Grotto at 2:30 a.m. we dearly hope it was the same for them. Alla prossima!

Das Swiss IT Magazine (ehemals InfoWeek) befasst sich in der neuesten Ausgabe vom 15. Juli 2009 schwerpunktmässig mit den Themen Business Process Management (BPM) und serviceorientierte Architekturen (SOA). Im Leitartikel „BPM und SOA als Vermittler: Geschäft und IT im Einklang“ geben die zwei Autoren Urs Binder und Alina Huber einen Einblick in die Themen BPM und SOA. Dabei werden auch die Grundlagen, Ziele, Versprechungen und aktuellen Geschehnisse beleuchtet. Bei der Marktübersicht der „wichtigsten BPM-Suiten im Überblick“ handelt es sich gemäss dem SWISS IT Magazine um diejenigen BPM-Suiten, welche erstens den gesammten Bereich des Geschäftsprozessmanagements abbilden und zweitens global aktiv sind. Für diese Übersicht hält sich Swiss IT Magazine weitgehend an die von Gartner ausgewählten Hersteller.

On April 2nd, we once again held a great business event, this time together with our consulting Partner X8X at Zurich’s famous Restaurant Baerengasse (co-founded by Yello’s Dieter Meier).

The after-work session was another milestone in our marketing success: about 30 attendees came from over 13 different financial services institutions, from as far as Valais, Berne or St. Gallen - but also from just around the corner. The keynote was held by Bank Julius Baer’s representatives Roman Riederer (Director Compliance) and Christian Hoffmann (Project Manager).

René Hürlimann, Numcom’s Sales Director, opened the 60 minutes session sharp 17:30. Tough for a passionate sales guy like him, René didn’t have the chance to go through his regular sales pitch but only had some 5 minutes to give the expectant attendees a quick background of the event's host, Numcom Software.

Next, Costas Papapoulios, Partner at X8X Process Solutions AG, took the lead. With customers such as Alstom, Novartis, Swisscom and UBS, our friends at X8X have an amazing track record. Costas pointed out crucial aspects, detailing how process consulting can help companies achieve a paradigm shift by merging the requirements of Business and IT.

The keynote was held by Roman Riederer and Christian Hoffmann, the two above-mentioned professionals of Bank Julius Baer, who captured the attentive audience with their story of the implementation of Appway. The project's goal was to automate and mainstream their Compliance processes, and it garnered a lot of positive feedback within the company: “The CoRA (Compliance and Regulatory Application) project was a full success and many colleagues at the front desk, working with Appway every day, are quite enthusiastic about the simplicity and the ease of use. The speedy implementation of Appway within just three months encouraged the project members”, said Roman Riederer, Director Compliance of Bank Julius Baer. Furthermore, Christian Hoffmann, Project Manager of the bank, was keen to point out the need for ready-to-change solutions: “Not only was Appway quickly integrated into our existing systems, but we have also been able to deploy all software updates while the platform was in productive use.”

Michael Trummer, Solution Manager at Numcom and in charge of the CoRA project, inherited the microphone. With an amazing live showcase Michael allowed direct insights into Appway and in doing so – taking just a couple of minutes before the eyes of the impressed audience – made clear that Appway indeed has the power and agility to speed up the management of a process driven application by 50%.

After the official part, everyone enjoyed Baerengasse’s delicious Argentinean style apéro riche. Thanks to the attendees we all had great discussions, or simply shared impressions of the evening and developed new ideas. The echo to the speeches was very positive. Many of our guests left later than they expected, still amazed by the simplicity and the endless possibilities of Appway.

Burke's illustration may be a bit exaggerated, but we have all seen poorly designed business applications. The question, then, becomes: Why? Why are business applications typically poorly designed?

I think the main reason for this is that most businesses still don't recognize that investing in usability leads to tangible monetary gains. Better usability means less errors made while using software. Better usability means less time spent fighting the application.

For us, usability and human interface design are imperative. User-friendly design comes first, both when designing administration tools, and when designing the actual business applications.

In future posts, I will explain some of the ways in which we continually improve our human interfaces, and thus, our user experience.
